Important Tire Maintenance Tips for Luxury Motor Coaches

Aug. 9 2021 News By Newell Coach

When it comes to the practical elements of motor coach usage, few components are more important to consider than tires. The tires of a motor coach absorb significantly more stress and weight than the tires for a standard sedan or SUV, and they play a major role in everything from passenger safety to gas mileage and several other areas -- making their care and maintenance extremely important for anyone who regularly travels in a coach.

Whether you need a major fix to a specific motor coach component or just some simple maintenance on important features, including tires, we're here to help. Both on your own and with the assistance of our service professionals, here are several tips we recommend when it comes to maintaining the quality of your motor coach's tires, particularly during long-term storage periods.

Keep Coach Tires Clean

Keeping your coach tires clean is important to make sure the treads and tire rubber are completely visible. The best way to do this is with a power washer or by using a stiff brush prior to inspection. If you're unable to use a power washer, a stiff brush or dish soap can be used in order to remove dirt, residue or mud from the tires.

In addition, cleaning tires will protect the anti-ozone and antioxidant coating and tire dressing that's typically present on coach tires. For this reason, don't over-wash your tires -- clean them at least a couple times a year and be sure they're free of dirt, but don't apply chemical cleaners more than once or twice a year.

Check Coach Tire Pressure

Checking the coach tire pressure is also important. The correct tire pressure should be stamped on the sidewall of the tire, but it can be difficult to read. For this reason, an accurate digital gauge is a great tool to have on-hand.

We recommend checking your tire pressure about once a week -- even if you haven't driven your coach that week. Newer Newell Coach’s have built in Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TMPS) that actively monitor the tire during your drives. If your coach isn’t equipped with a TPMS system, use a Truck or RV tire pressure gauge to check the pressures before you drive for the day.

Limit Weight on Coach Tires

We recommend that you limit the amount of weight on your tires in order to extend their lifespan. This means avoiding hitting large bumps or potholes that may cause damage, as well as choosing a parking spot at a campground where there's little risk of hitting low-hanging branches or other objects that could scrape the sides and bottom of the coach. In addition, while the coach is being stored, do your best to remove heavy items that don't need to be weighing the tires down.

Keep Coach Tires Covered During Storage

To preserve the life of your coach's tires, it's important to keep them covered during storage. Covering the tires not only prevents them from becoming dirty or collecting debris, but also helps maintain the rolling resistance and traction that's important for safety and fuel economy. If the tires are made with an anti-ozone and antioxidant coating, you should still cover them so that they're not exposed to sunlight -- which could damage this type of chemical protection.

Otherwise, we recommend using clear plastic sheeting -- which is best installed with a layer of hardware cloth around the edges for added durability and security -- or another high-quality material that can keep water away from your coach's tires.
